CBT with Functional Disorders

"A Functional Approach"

I like to consider the word ‘functional’ in therapy as treatment tailored to you - personal and holistic.

I have an interest and experience of working with individuals with functional conditions such as Functional Neurological Disorders, Fibromyalgia, CFS/ME, and other medically unexplained symptoms.

What is a Functional Disorder?

Tired of being passed from one referral to the next, having to repeat yourself and being no closer to understanding your physical symptoms?

A functional disorder is an umbrella term for a group of recognisable medical conditions. Diagnosis can be tricky due to there being physical symptoms without a clear physical cause. It can often entail a long process of elimination entailing tests, scans and countless referrals. The lack of clarity and certainty can impact mental health. Commonly, it is titled ‘the invisible disability’ and this comes as no surprise. Do you ever feel like people are questioning your health? Feeling judged? Or having to prove your daily struggles to others and over compensating? Does this lead to exhaustion, excessive worrying and general difficulties in the management of your physical health? CBT can help with this.

How can CBT help with functional disorders?

CBT can help to shift our way of thinking about our physical health condition, enabling you to live a full and meaningful life alongside your physical health functional disorder. Exploring acceptance, flexibility and addressing your values and how you can live in-line with these. CBT strategies are adapted to work with you and your functional condition. Fees are charged at the same rate as standard CBT assessments and treatments.
